Diep.io (stylized as diep.io) is a multiplayer browser game created by Brazilian developer Matheus Valadares in 2016. Miniclip first published the mobile version. In Diep.io, players control tanks in a two-dimensional arena. They earn experience points and upgrades by destroying shapes and other tanks.

Valadares created the similar Agar.io in 2015. Its viral popularity inspired a genre of similar browser games with simple gameplay and graphics called ".io games", which includes Diep.io. Diep.io was praised for its upgrade system, which gave it more depth and replay value than other ".io games". In 2021, it was acquired by Addicting Games. In 2024, it was acquired by 3AM Experiences who then contracted out VexxusArts to update and maintain the game. Google Play reports over 10 million mobile downloads as of 2023.[1]

Background and development

Brazilian developer Matheus Valadares created Agar.io in April 2015. It is a simple browser game where cells attempt to grow larger by eating agar and other cells. Agar.io's unexpected viral success, supported by its popularity on platforms such as YouTube, led to millions of daily players and it becoming the most popular video game of 2015. A mobile port was released by Swiss publisher Miniclip.[2][3][4]

Agar.io's rapid rise inspired the similar, snake-themed Slither.io and later an entire genre of simple multiplayer browser games called ".io games", many of which were shooters.[2] Valadares released a shooter ".io game" called Diep.io in mid-2016,[5] and Miniclip soon released a mobile version for iOS and Android.[6]

In 2021, Addicting Games—then owned by Enthusiast Gaming—acquired Diep.io for an undisclosed amount. They previously acquired two other ".io games", Starve.io and Mope.io, and Valadares' Bubble Tanks. CEO Bill Karamousiz said they planned to rebuild the mobile app and add new game modes, achievements and cosmetics, among other improvements.[7]

In 2024, the game came under new development. The game was purchased by the Youtuber Mistik. The new development team added a new auto tank briefly after acquiring the game.

Gameplay

Like other .io games, Diep.io features simple gameplay and graphics consisting of basic shapes.[8][9] Players control a tank in a multiplayer, two-dimensional arena. They earn experience points by destroying shapes and other tanks which spawn throughout the arena and killing other tanks.[7][10] Tanks can upgrade into different classes suited to tailor individual strengths and weaknesses when they reach thresholds of Level 15; Level 30; and Level 45, which is the maximum.[6] Some miscellaneous attributes like health, body damage, and size are increased with level. Some unique tank classes can control drones, shoot missiles, or lay traps. Every time the player levels up, or once every three levels starting at Level 30, they get a point which can be spent to upgrade game statistics such as health, bullet damage, and reload. A score board displays the players with the most points.[11] Diep.io has eight multiplayer game modes, including free-for-all and several team-based modes, as well as a few mini-game modes.[8][10] When rounds end, special server tanks called Arena Closers are called into the arena to defeat the remaining players in order to close the server.

Reception

Reviews praised Diep.io as one of the best .io games alongside Agar.io and Slither.io, noting that the more in-depth tank upgrade system offered more replay value than other games in the genre.[8][10][12][13] Android Authority described it as a spiritual successor of Agar.io.[6] Conversely, Simon Reed of Gamezebo opined that the early stages of gameplay were slow and the gameplay loop was not compelling enough to keep players after the first several playthroughs, unlike Agar.io and Slither.io, saying that Diep.io is "lacking in a few key departments that just hold it back from greatness." He rated it 3.5/5 stars.[9] Christian Vas of PCGamesN considered the team-based game modes to be the best.[10]

Tanks

There are currently 50 tanks in Diep.io, 1 tier 1 tank, 4 tier 2 tanks, 12 tier 3 tanks, and 33 tier 4 tanks.

Tier 1: Level 1

Basic Tank

This is the initial tank players control in Diep.io. It features a single barrel capable of destroying yellow squares in two hits, red triangles in five, and blue pentagons in 22, assuming no additional stats are allocated. Its health, bullet, and movement attributes are balanced, improving as players collect points from eliminating polygons and other tanks.

Tier 2: Level 15

Upon reaching Level 15, players can choose from four Tier 2 specializations or opt to remain a Basic Tank to access the Smasher at Level 30 or the Auto Tank at Level 45.

Tank Upgrades

Twin

Choosing the Twin class equips your tank with an additional frontal barrel, though bullet power is slightly reduced. The increased rate of fire leads to greater recoil.

Sniper

The Sniper class enhances your field of view, allowing you to see further. Bullet speed is also increased, extending bullet travel distance. However, its reload speed is noticeably slower, and damage remains unchanged.

Machine Gun

The Machine Gun projects bullets from a trapezoid-shaped barrel at its front, firing at twice the rate of a Basic Tank, matching the Twin's fire rate. While less accurate, it covers a broader area. Its bullet damage is slightly higher than the Twin's but less than the Basic Tank's.

Flank Guard

Opting for the Flank Guard class adds a barrel to the rear of your tank, enabling you to fire in both directions for defensive purposes. With identical recoil from both barrels, the Flank Guard experiences effectively no recoil.

Tier 3: Level 30

Upon reaching Level 30, players can choose from twelve Tier 3 specializations, with two offering multiple upgrade paths.

Twin Upgrades

Triple Shot

The Triple Shot class introduces an additional barrel, spreading the guns across the front of the tank. While it can saturate a wide area with bullets, direct firepower is significantly diminished. Recoil will push the player backward.

Quad Tank

The Quad Tank features four guns positioned around its sides in a plus formation, allowing it to fire bullets in all four cardinal directions. Its direct firepower is considerably less than before, and recoil is negated. This tank can also be upgraded from the Flank Guard.

Twin Flank

The Twin Flank mirrors the Twin's barrels to the rear, providing extra defense. Recoil is also nullified. This tank can also be upgraded from the Flank Guard.

Sniper Upgrades

Assassin

The Assassin class further enhances the Sniper's vision, increasing the field of view.

Overseer

The Overseer utilizes spawners that generate drones instead of firing bullets. Holding the left mouse button, "Space," or pressing "E" directs the drones to follow your cursor. Pressing the right mouse button or "Shift" sends all drones away from the cursor's location, allowing for manual control. Otherwise, drones will orbit the player and engage nearby polygons. Overseers can manage a maximum of eight drones.

Hunter

The Hunter incorporates a smaller gun within its primary barrel, firing in a two-round burst. Its field of view is slightly increased.

Trapper

The Trapper replaces the Sniper's barrel with a launcher that deploys traps with immense penetration. A launcher's range is considerably shorter than a barrel's, as traps cease movement after a second. This enables the creation of a protective barrier that can intercept enemy bullets or cordon off an area. It's often recommended to stay as a Sniper or Basic Tank until Level 45 due to the Trapper's difficulty in farming experience.

Machine Gun Upgrades

Destroyer

The Destroyer boasts a massive, slow-firing barrel that unleashes a single, giant bullet with each shot. Firing this barrel generates significant recoil. With sufficient points in bullet stats, it can pierce through a wall of bullets and still retain enough power to one-shot a tank. The Destroyer branch features the most powerful Level 45 ammunition in the game; its bullet is nearly 10 times stronger than most medium-sized bullets and is challenging to stop.

Gunner

The Gunner rapidly fires small bullets in a straight line from four frontal miniguns. Reload speed doubles at the expense of decreased damage, and recoil is significantly reduced. These small bullets can bypass enemy defenses and chip away at their health.

Flank Guard Upgrades

Tri-Angle

The Tri-Angle is equipped with two rear barrels positioned to provide additional thrust when fired. The Tri-Angle can propel itself using recoil while simultaneously firing from the front. Its rear bullets are approximately four to five times weaker than its front barrel bullets, making them among the weakest in the game with a very poor bullet size to damage ratio.

Quad Tank

The Quad Tank features four guns positioned around its sides, allowing it to fire bullets in all four cardinal directions. Its direct firepower is considerably less than before, and recoil is negated. This tank can also be upgraded from the Twin.

Twin Flank

The Twin Flank adds an extra barrel to both the front and rear of the Flank Guard. Recoil is disabled. This tank can also be upgraded from the Twin.

Auto 3

The Auto 3 is fitted with three Auto Turrets mounted on its sides. The tank slowly rotates constantly, while its turrets automatically track and fire at the closest entities. The turrets can be partially controlled; holding the left mouse button will direct one or two turrets (depending on their position) toward the cursor, while holding the right mouse button will make the turrets face away from the cursor.

Tank Upgrades (Requires staying as a Basic Tank)

Smasher

The Smasher is a specialized ramming tank. Upgrading to the Smasher removes all barrels and bullet upgrade options, allowing the tank to allocate ten upgrade points per body stat slot instead of seven. The field of view also expands to that of a Sniper. Any points previously invested in bullet stats are refunded and can be reallocated to the newly available slots, which include Max Health, Health Regen, Body Damage, and Movement Speed.

Tier 4: Level 45

Upon reaching Level 45, players can select one of these Tier 4 specializations, the final tier for most tanks and the maximum level unless becoming a Dominator in Domination mode. There are thirty-three total, with some offering multiple upgrade paths.

Triple Shot Upgrades

Triplet

The Triplet features an additional barrel compared to the Twin, significantly boosting its firing rate, making it one of the fastest shooters in the game. It is often recommended for a Level 30 Twin to hold off on upgrading to Triple Shot until Level 45, as a Triple Shot's bullets are very spread out and have limited direct firepower. The Triplet's bullets are slightly weaker than a Twin's to balance its high firepower.

Penta Shot

The Penta Shot can fire five bullets at a rapid pace, barraging the entire area in front of the tank. This is similar to the Octo Tank, but its guns are much closer together and only fire forward. It has very high recoil.

Spread Shot

This class boasts eleven barrels! The Spread Shot fires these simultaneously, creating a massive "spread" of bullets with surprisingly high penetration. The central barrel fires a normal-sized bullet (similar to the Basic Tank's), while the other ten barrels fire Gunner bullets. It experiences almost no recoil.

Quad Tank Upgrades

Octo Tank

The Octo Tank enables the player to fire in eight directions, with each barrel equally spaced. This results in a storm of bullets spreading across the area. The barrels fire in an alternating pattern: four opposite barrels in a cross shape fire simultaneously, followed by the other four. Players can press "C" to activate auto-spin for an even bullet distribution around the tank.

Auto 5

The Auto 5 upgrades from the Quad Tank by gaining one more gun and replacing all barrels with Auto Turrets. Players can control 2-3 turrets and command more firepower, though the turrets have limited rotation. It can also be upgraded from the Auto 3.

Twin Flank Upgrades

Triple Twin

The Triple Twin equips the player with three sets of Twin barrels, each set equally spaced. This spreads bullets in a manner similar to the Octo Tank, though less dispersed, with significantly greater direct firepower.

Battleship

The Battleship replaces all of the player's barrels with Mini Spawners that rapidly produce drones. Half of these drones are manually controlled, while the other half are auto-controlled. However, these drones automatically disappear four seconds after spawning and are known as Partisans. This tank can also be upgraded from the Overseer.

Assassin Upgrades

Ranger

The Ranger is identical to the Assassin, but its Field of View is even larger than both the Assassin and the Stalker's. It possesses the highest vision range of any tank and demands considerable skill to land long-range shots.

Stalker

The Stalker has a unique ability: Stealth. It can become invisible when immobile and after not firing any bullets for approximately two seconds. While invisible, the player can still take damage. When damaged, the tank is partially revealed, making it visible. If the Stalker moves, the invisibility cloak will completely drop. It's recommended that as soon as an enemy spots you after being hit by a bullet or polygon, you either move away or fire back immediately, as even minimal contact will temporarily make you visible.

Overseer Upgrades

Overlord

Similar to the Overseer, but now featuring four spawners for drone production. The maximum of eight drones remains, but the production rate is essentially doubled, though the core reload stat itself does not change.

Necromancer

The player loses all ability to fire any projectile. Instead, the player must "infect" a nearby yellow square using the tank's body. That square can then infect other squares, and so on, until an army of up to 36 squares (at max drone count) is formed. Reload skill points now increase the maximum drone count by two per upgrade. These deadly squares inflict less damage than the Overseer's or Overlord's drones, but their sheer number can overwhelm opponents.

Manager

The player loses one spawner, leaving only one. This is partially offset as the sole spawner produces drones almost twice as fast, with an eight drone cap still in place. The Manager can also turn invisible, akin to the Stalker and the Landmine.

Overtrapper

The Overtrapper now has two drones and a trap launcher at the front. Despite what appears to be a downgrade, it is quite powerful. This tank can also be upgraded from the Trapper.

Battleship

The Battleship replaces all of the player's barrels with Mini Spawners that rapidly produce drones. Half of these drones are manually controlled, while the other half are auto-controlled. However, these drones automatically disappear four seconds after spawning and are known as Partisans. This tank can also be upgraded from the Twin Flank.

Factory

Instead of spawning drones, this tank spawns a maximum of six factory drones, all of which follow the cursor when either the fire button or "E" is pressed (Auto Fire). Its appearance closely resembles that of a Necromancer, with the only difference being the number of spawners. There is also a slight chance that newly spawned players (teammates only) will spawn out of a Factory, making it the only way to spawn outside of a base in team modes.

Hunter Upgrades

Predator

The Predator adds a third barrel to the top of the tank and grants a unique ability: by holding right-click, players can extend their vision further in the direction they are facing. The zoomed screen does not move with the player, so it's advisable to zoom thoughtfully. This tank combines elements of the old two-barrel Predator and the X Hunter. Its bullets have high damage stats. The zoom distance is customizable; clicking when the mouse pointer is far away zooms significantly, while a closer pointer results in less zoom.

Streamliner

The Streamliner replaces all barrels with five short, overlapping barrels. They fire sequentially at extremely high speed, creating a pseudo-laser of Gunner bullets. Since it also originates from the Hunter in the Sniper upgrade branch, it possesses a vision range equal to the Hunter's.

Trapper Upgrades

Tri-Trapper

The Tri-Trapper triples its trap production, features faster reload, but has a shorter trap lifespan. It's almost purely a defensive tank, best used to provide cover for teammates.

Gunner Trapper

A unique blend of the Trapper and the Gunner. Its two barrels now point towards the player's mouse, and the launcher at the back faces the opposite direction. It launches slightly larger traps than regular ones. The Gunner barrels have half the reload speed but possess incredible penetration for their size. This tank can also be upgraded from the Gunner.

Overtrapper

It's a Trapper with two drones and a trap placer in front. This deadly combination can make this tank difficult for non-snipers to approach. This tank can also be upgraded from the Overseer.

Mega Trapper

This tank makes its launcher twice as large and enables it to shoot Mega Traps, the second most powerful Level 45 ammunition in the game. The Mega Trapper has a slower reload than the base Trapper and a shorter trap lifespan.

Auto Trapper

A Trapper with a mounted turret mounted on top. The turret is powerful, has free rotation, and is highly effective when combined with the Trapper's defensive capabilities.

Destroyer Upgrades

Hybrid

The Hybrid is a fusion of the Overseer and the Destroyer. It has a spawner at the back of the tank, capable of producing a maximum of two drones. Additionally, it retains the powerful Destroyer barrel.

Annihilator

Its bullet is nearly twice the size of its predecessor's, with increased recoil and the same reload speed. Its bullet damage and penetration remain consistent with the Destroyer's.

Skimmer

Similar in design to the Hunter but with wider barrels, this tank features a deployer and fires a Destroyer bullet along with two small barrels positioned 180 degrees apart. However, the main bullet's damage is significantly reduced. These bullets are known as missiles. Currently, only the Skimmer, Rocketeer, and Glider utilize missiles.

Rocketeer

The Rocketeer fires missiles that have a Machine Gun Barrel on their back, propelling the bullet forward with slight inaccuracy due to the machine gun barrel's nature. The Rocketeer missile is the most penetrating projectile in the game.

Glider

The Glider fires missiles that have two smaller barrels on their back, positioned 35 degrees apart. This bullet type was previously used by the Skimmer.

Gunner Upgrades

Auto Gunner

A Gunner equipped with an mounted turret on top. The turret has free rotation, an extended Field of View, and is surprisingly powerful. Observing where this turret fires can help the player detect tanks that would otherwise be out of sight. This tank can also be upgraded from the Auto 3.

This tank can also be upgraded from the Trapper.

Machine Gun Upgrades(Requires staying as a Machine Gun)

Sprayer

The Sprayer gains a secondary barrel in the center of its large barrel, which fires Gunner bullets at about half the reload speed of the larger barrel, albeit with much greater accuracy. The Sprayer also has increased recoil and a higher rate of fire compared to the Machine Gun. It fires in a sequence of three bullets: one normal-sized bullet, then another normal-sized bullet and one smaller bullet simultaneously. The larger bullet is as strong as a Machine Gun bullet, and the small one is seven times weaker. However, the large barrel is wider and thus less accurate, while the small barrel is not wide (making it very accurate, but at the cost of significantly less damage).

Tri-Angle Upgrades

Booster

This Tri-Angle upgrade adds two extra guns on the back, allowing for faster movement from recoil.

Fighter

This variant of the Tri-Angle has two extra guns on the sides for improved defense and offense. The side barrels have damage between that of the front barrel and the back barrels.

Auto 3 Upgrades

Auto 5

Upon upgrading from the Auto 3, the Auto 5 receives two additional Auto Turrets. The player can now control 2-3 guns at a time and utilize more firepower. The turrets cannot rotate a full 360 degrees. This tank can also be upgraded from the Quad Tank.

Auto Gunner

A Gunner equipped with a mounted turret on top. The turret has free rotation, an extended Field of View, and is surprisingly powerful. Observing where this turret fires can help the player detect tanks that would otherwise be out of sight. This tank can also be upgraded from the Gunner.

Smasher Upgrades

Landmine

A Smasher that can become invisible when not moving or taking damage for a full thirteen seconds. Due to the extended time required to become fully invisible and how quickly it can be dispelled, it is strongly advised to use this tank with caution. The tank is composed of two spinning hexagons, with one spinning half as fast.

Auto Smasher

The Auto Turret on top is the same as the Auto Gunner's and the Auto Trapper's. This tank can be potentially deadly if enough points are allocated to bullet upgrades or body upgrades, but at the expense of either defense or an effective turret, respectively. This tank is unique in allowing ten upgrades for every stat.

Spike

The Spike primarily increases Body Damage. It is the most resilient tank in the game and will consistently defeat enemy rammers, except for another Spike. Its hull features twelve evenly spaced triangles.

Tank Upgrades(Requires staying as a Basic Tank)

Auto Tank

The Auto Tank is an enhanced version of the Basic Tank, which incorporates an auxiliary mounted turret mounted on top of its body for secondary defense.
