Diego Falconí Trávez (born in Quito in 1979) is an Ecuadorian lawyer, professor and essayist.[1][2] His areas of study include themes such as gender, sexuality,[3] decolonial theories, Andean studies and sexual dissent.[2] In 2016, he was awarded the Casa de las Américas Prize in the essay category for his book De las cenizas al texto.[4]

Biography

He was born in 1979 in Quito in the Pichincha Province of Ecuador.[2] He studied at the San Francisco University of Quito, where he became a human rights lawyer with a focus on gender and LGBTQIA+ perspectives. He later obtained a doctorate in comparative literature and literary theory at the Autonomous University of Barcelona.[5]

He won the 2016 edition of the Casa de las Américas Prize in the essay category for his work De las cenizas al texto. Literaturas andinas de las disidencias sexuales en el siglo XX. The jury awarding the prize described the work as "a deep look in terms of analysis and criticism on the chosen writers and their works."[4][6][7] In the book, Falconí explores the work of authors such as Pablo Palacio, Julieta Paredes, Fernando Vallejo,[8] Jaime Bayly and Adalberto Ortiz.[9]

In 2018, he published as an editor the work Inflexión Marica. Escrituras del descalabro gay en América Latina.[10] The work, which compiles a series of essays by different authors on gay identity and sexual diversity in Latin America from art and literature perspectives, was chosen in 2022 by the newspaper El Universo among its recommended LGBT works by Ecuadorian authors.[11]

Falconí works as a professor and researcher at the College of Jurisprudence of the San Francisco University of Quito. He is also the director of the university's law journal, Iuris Dictio, and co-director of the Intertextos research group.[1]

Personal life

Falconí is openly homosexual and claims the word "maricón" to identify his sexuality. In his opinion, words like "gay" have "classist and colonialist connotations from the Northern Hemisphere".[7][12]
