Coleg Cymunedol Y Dderwen is a large English-medium comprehensive school serving the Garw and Ogmore valleys. The school was formed as a result of a merger of Ogmore Comprehensive School and Ynysawdre Comprehensive School in 2011.[3] The school initially operated as a split site school, with students being taught on the campus of both of the previous schools, but in 2013 the school moved to its new building located next to the old Ynysawdre site.
The new building, designed by Scott Brownrigg and constructed by Leadbitter won the BREEAM Outstanding award in 2013.[4]
The school was the first in Wales to issue all of its students with an iPad Mini[5] as educational tools, designed to inspire creativity and aid hands on learning.
Estyn has given Coleg Cymunedol Y Dderwen an overall performance rating of Unsatisfactory.[6]
For 2017, Coleg Cymunedol Y Dderwen was placed in the Amber support category by the Welsh Government.[6]
Student review placed on 'schoolparrot' by student "This school doesn't do much with mental health, they offer counselling but it's only once a week, they give students detention for the stupidest things ever, for example, the student stated they had more important things as for, mental health and helping around the house, and this student had a detention even though mental health and helping around the house is a lot more important than homework (especially mental health). This school also says that they offer support by their pastoral office, but every time a student goes to the pastoral office, they get turned down and there is no one there to help the students. In my opinion this is the worst school and I wouldn't send any of my kids to that school in the future, especially with the history that I have had with this school and the history before I was in this school."
