Climate change in Vienna

Climate change in the Austrian state of Vienna affects various environments and industries.

Greenhouse gas emissions

Annual greenhouse gas emissions in 2005 accounted for 2,900,000 tonnes in 2017, and 2,900,000 tonnes in 2020.[1]

Impacts of climate change

Increased mortality rate

The overall mortality rate would increase, but the increase would be especially large for older, poorer and socially disadvantaged people.[2]

Response

Legislation

Wiener Landes-Klimagesetz

Vienna State Climate Act
Municipal Council and Landtag of Vienna
Keywords
climate change mitigation
Status: In force

Due to there being no recent federal legislation, the state of Vienna legislated for targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.[3]

Vienna was the first state to make this commitment.[4]

Under the legislation, Vienna is to reach net zero emissions by 2040.[5] The legislation is intended to complement and not replace existing legislation regarding building regulations and tree protection.[6]

The legislation also has the following requirements as well as others:[7]

  • climate timetables must be updated every 5 years
  • climate budgets must be developed to show the city's climate measures
  • climate must be considered in the development of laws and regulations, and also construction projects
  • climate alliances may be established to allow for companies and other organisations operating in the city
