A young Alicia learns of the history of the dark lands ruled by four demon kings from her father and inspires to be an adventurer. As a young adult, her father was killed in an attack. In the present, Alicia is now a member of a group of thirteen heroes sent by the kingdom’s royal family of Haiden to slay the demon king Clevatess, fighting hordes of monsters along the way. However, Clevatess proves to be too powerful and the heroes are all killed, though he is also curious about how humanity has changed after noticing that Alicia's sword was able to do some damage to him. In retaliation for attacking his domain, Clevatess invades Haiden and easily defeats the soldiers before killing the king after he refuses to say why he wanted him dead. Before leaving, a dying woman requests for him to take care of a baby that she has, and he reluctantly does so. Having trouble taking care of the baby, he revives Alicia with his dark magic that makes her unable to defy him or die while disposing of her comrades and their weapons. He requests for Alicia to breastfeed the baby, but she cannot do so because she's a virgin. They decide to hire a wet nurse and take some arcanacites, the crystals in Clevatess’s domain and is what Alicia's sword is made from, as payment. Clevatess also takes a human form (with only his horn showing) that resembles the woman who had the baby before, uses the alias Clen, and names the baby Luna. While taking care of Luna at Alicia’s camp, Alicia discovers that Luna is of royal blood from the Haiden family, to which Clen decides to make it king while watching from the shadows. They are ambushed by bandits, who surprisingly are able to subdue and capture them, though Clen is unfazed by the situation. Meanwhile, a man with pink hair like Luna's discovers that the king of Haiden had foolishly attacked the dark lands, making a legend come true, while another kingdom attempts to get its hands on the arcanacites in the remains of Haiden.

Clen reveals that he is weaker in human form and intends to stay this way until Luna becomes king, while also hoping to examine humanity more closely this way. Alicia reveals that they are captured by a group of slave traders called the Crows. Arriving at their hideout, one slave is killed after trying to escape. Alicia brought to see the boss while Clen is made to work in the kitchen where he meets Neruru, a slave girl, and the kitchen's owner, Carme. Upon meeting Broco, the leader of the Crows, and his pet troll Betty, he discovers that Alicia has arcanacites and reveals that his organization not only sells slaves, but also fake weaponry. Knowing of the thirteen heroes' fight against Clevatess and Haiden's destruction, he deducts that Alicia and her former comrades' weapons are made from arcanacites and demands that she takes them to where they are, but she refuses. Meanwhile, Nururu breastfeeds Luna while Clen is still not bothered by the situation. Carme grows curious about Clen's true nature. While Neruru is being punished, Clen kills her attackers and requests her backstory. Neruru explains that she was born in the Crows' hideout and her mother disappear sometime later, though she does not know who her father was. She eventually had a baby, but it died upon birth, so she resorted to breastfeeding other children. Clen attempts to hire her as Luna's wet nurse, but she declines since they are both slaves, unaware of Clen's true colors. Alicia is brought to a flooded mine where she witnesses a man being killed by a giant sea monster called Arvensis while diving for something hidden beneath and learns that a hero named Khord was killed here before; his sword is still somewhere in the mine, which is what the Crows are after. A blind bandit tries to rape Alicia, but she uses her immortality to her advantage and makes them both fall from a great height in hopes that Clen's curse will ensure that she survives.
