Clathrodrillia marissae is a species of sea snail, a marine gastropod mollusc in the family Drilliidae.[1]

Description

Clathrodrillia marissae is a moderately sized drilliid gastropod with a shell reaching up to 37.1 mm in length.[2] Its form is fusiform and turreted, featuring at least nine convex whorls (though the protoconch is often missing). The shell displays prominent axial ribs that run from suture to suture, superimposed by strong spiral cords. Notably, these cords become nodulose at the rib crests—a key distinguishing feature among congeners like C. petuchi and C. gibbosa

Distribution

As of current records, C. marissae is known exclusively from its type locality off Grand Bahama Island, in the northwestern Atlantic. The holotype was collected at a depth of approximately 183 m, indicating a preference for deeper marine habitats rather than shallow coastal zones

Taxonomy and naming

Described by Fallon in 2016, Clathrodrillia marissae was added during a comprehensive taxonomic revision of shallow-water Drilliidae, which introduced 100 new species.[3] Within the genus Clathrodrillia, this species is set apart by the combination of its nodulose spiral cords, glossy shell surface, and a long anterior canal. The species epithet "marissae" honors the taxonomist's daughter-in-law, Marissa, further emphasizing its place as a distinct entity within the genus[4]
