Castletown is a suburb of Stafford in the Borough of Stafford in Staffordshire, England. It is located on the southwestern fringe of the town centre. According to the 2021 Census, the suburb alongside nearby Doxey had a population of 4,231 residents.
History
The area was originally marshland and remained undeveloped until the arrival of the Grand Junction Railway in 1837, when the area began to see new housing developments and industrial works springing up due to the arrival of the railways[2] and the Industrial Revolution.[3] Castletown therefore began to develop into a working-class area for the railway workers and their families of the Grand Junction Railway and other rail-related industries. Additionally, the construction of both Stafford railway station and Station Hotel (now demolished) further contributed to the growth of the suburb around the railway station and lines passing through it.[4] Today, the area serves as a residential area.
Amenities
The area is close to Stafford town centre for its main shopping, employment and educational needs as well as worship and community gatherings. The only notable amenity in Castletown is the Railway Inn pub on Castle Street.[5] As well as the Stafford Conservative Association, also on Castle Street.
Transportation
The area is primarily served by Stafford railway station, with the bus station a short walk away in the town centre. Buses connect the area to Stafford, Doxey, Wheaton Aston, and Gnosall.[6]
