Captain Ohn Kyaw Myint (Burmese: အုန်းကျော်မြင့်; died July 27, 1977) was a Burmese army officer who was known for organizing a failed coup attempt against the of General Ne Win in the 1970s.
Early life and education
Ohn Kyaw Myint was born in Burma, though details about his early life and family background remain limited in public records. He pursued higher education at Rangoon University, one of the country’s leading academic institutions. Following his university studies, he entered the Burmese military through the Officer Training School (OTS) as part of the 29th intake. He was recognized for his performance during training, receiving the Best Cadet award upon graduation.
Military career
Ohn Kyaw Myint graduated from Rangoon University, and later joined the Officers Training School, Bahtoo (OTS), where he completed the 29th intake. He received the best cadet award during his time at the academy.[1] He served as a staff officer under General Kyaw Htin, the then commander-in-chief of the Burmese armed forces.[2]
Coup attempt and trial
Ohn Kyaw Myint was implicated in an attempted military coup along with a group of younger officers. The plan was uncovered by Military Intelligence before it could be carried out. He was arrested and tried in a closed military tribunal.[1] Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of State Peace and Development Council, who was a junior officer at the time of the trial, stood as a witness.[2]
Execution
Ohn Kyaw Myint was convicted of treason and sentenced to death. He was executed by hanging at Insein Prison on 27 July 1977.
