Lieutenant General Asif Yasin Malik HI(M) is a retired three-star general of the Pakistan Army and a former Defence Secretary of Pakistan. He commanded key military institutions including the XI Corps in Peshawar and the Command and Staff College in Quetta. He later served as Defence Secretary from 2012 to 2014.[1]
Military career
Asif Yasin Malik was commissioned into the Pakistan Army in 1973. He served as Director General for both Joint Intelligence and Foreign Operations within the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), and Chief of Staff of a Strike Corps.[2]
From 2008 to 2010, he served as the Commandant of the prestigious Command and Staff College in Quetta.[3]
In 2010, he was appointed as Corps Commander of XI Corps, Peshawar. During his command, the corps led counter-terrorism operations in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and tribal areas. He retired from military service in December 2011.[4]
Post-retirement
After retirement, Malik was appointed Defence Secretary in July 2012.[5]
He also engaged in public discourse and academic circles, contributing to defense and policy think tanks.[2]
In 2022, he was appointed as the Chairman of the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA).[6]
Education
Malik earned a Master’s degree from the National Defence University, Islamabad, and a Master’s in Strategic Resource Management from the National Defense University, Washington, D.C., where he was inducted into the Alumni Hall of Fame.[2]
