Abdul Salam Haykal (Arabic: عبد السلام هيكل) is the minister of communication and information technology in the Syrian transitional government since 29 March 2025.[1]
Education
Haykal earned a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from the American University of Beirut, then obtained a master’s degree in International Relations from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) at the University of London in the United Kingdom.[2]
Professional Life
Entrepreneurship
Haykal founded several companies and institutions in the fields of technology and media,[3] including:
- Majarra Company: Responsible for publishing Arabic editions of prestigious magazines such as Harvard Business Review, MIT Technology Review, and Popular Science. It also manages knowledge platforms like "Man Hom?" and the "Stanford Social Innovation Platform".
- Lubelb Company: Specializes in developing artificial intelligence technologies and Arabic language processing, offering customized search services for Arabic websites.
- Transtech Information Systems Company: Focuses on producing computer systems for businesses, developing cloud applications, and providing mobile services.
Government Positions
In March 2025, Abdul Salam Haykal was appointed Minister of Communications and Information Technology in the 2025 Syrian Transitional Government. Haykal emphasized that his priorities include addressing citizen complaints, reactivating the communications sector, updating damaged infrastructure, and tackling challenges related to sanctions and global technological developments.[4]
Social Activities and Advisory Roles
Haykal co-founded the Syrian Association for Young Entrepreneurs and currently serves as the Chairman of its Board of Directors. He is also a member of the boards of trustees of several educational institutions, including the American University of Beirut and Al-Qalamoun University in Syria. Additionally, he is a member of the Arabic Language Advisory Council in the United Arab Emirates.
Awards and Recognition
Haykal was named a "Young Global Leader" by the World Economic Forum. He also received the Media Creativity Award from the Arab Thought Foundation in recognition of his contributions to the fields of media and technology.[5]
