Lieutenant General Aamer Riaz HI(M) is a retired senior officer of the Pakistan Army, who notably served as the Commander of Southern Command. Before retiring, he served as the President National Defence University.

Military career

Riaz was commissioned into the Pakistan Armoured Corps.

As a brigadier, he commanded the 111th Infantry Brigade. Following his promotion to major general, he was appointed as General Officer Commanding in Lahore and later was posted as Director General Military Operations (DGMO) at the GHQ in Rawalpindi.[1][2]

In September 2015, upon his promotion to Lieutenant General, Riaz assumed command of the Southern Command in Quetta.[3][4] Under his command, an agent of the Research and Analysis Wing, Kulbhushan Jadhav was captured and arrested.[5] He also condemned the attack of Afghanistan on Pakistani civilians and military personnel, stating that Pakistan will avenge the attack with full strike.[6] Riaz had allegedly claimed India's involvement in spreading terror in Pakistan.[7]

In September 2017, he was appointed as Commander of the IV Corps situated at Lahore, one of the key field appointments.[8] Notably, he was one of the officers who met with top civilian government officials to discuss matter of internal security of the region and country.[9][10]

Before retiring from active military service, Riaz had served as President of the National Defence University in Islamabad.[11][12]

Riaz was awarded the Hilal-i-Imtiaz (Military) in recognition of his distinguished military service.[13]

Criticism

Journalist Asad Ali Toor stated that Riaz was allegedly involved in removing Nawaz Sharif from politics of Pakistan, under the command of Ahmad Shuja Pasha.[14]

Post-retirement

After retiring from the army, Riaz took on the role of President at the Centre for Global & Strategic Studies (CGSS).[15]
