A Good Man's Journey is the debut solo album by Neil Carswell, former lead singer of the 1990s southern rock band, Copperhead. The album was released on November 15, 2006 via Eastwinds Records.

Background and history

After curating the release of Live & Lost, a 2002 live album by his former band Copperhead, Carswell began laying the groundwork for his solo career. Recording sessions for his debut solo effort began in 2003 and spanned several years and locations, including Long View Farm Studios, Normandy Sound, and OmniSound which led to Carswell collaborating with a range of session musicians and producers during this time, including Stu Kimball (Bob Dylan), Phil Green, Chris Anderson (Outlaws), and Johnny Neel (Allman Brothers Band).[3]

Initially announced in 2005 under the working title Southwind, the album was later renamed A Good Man's Journey before its official release in November 2006 through Eastwinds Records. It featured contributions from notable artists such as Barry Goudreau (Boston), Larry Campbell (Bob Dylan's backing band), and members of the J. Geils Band and Charlie Daniels Band.[4]

Several tracks on the album are rooted in Carswell's personal experiences. "The Cain Preacher" was written in a Nashville hotel room while Carswell was in town recording overdubs. He describes the song as blending a "heavy metal approach with a back porch vibe," inspired by his childhood and time spent on the river with his uncle. "Good Man's Journey" was written in an apartment above Normandy Studios in Rhode Island and was lyrically influenced by a passage from Proverbs 7:19. Another track, "Walking Out on You", was co-written with Dylan Altman and recorded with Johnny Neel, who reportedly learned and performed the song after only two listens.[5]
