The 2025 season was the 18th for Indian Premier League franchise Delhi Capitals. They finished in 6th place in previous season's league stage.[1] Ahead of the season, Axar Patel was announced as the new captain.

The season was a mixed campaign for the team, who finished 5th in the points table with 15 points from 14 matches. Despite showing strong performances and staying in the playoff race until the final stages, they narrowly missed out on qualification. Their season featured several close contests and standout individual efforts, but inconsistency at crucial moments cost them a spot in the top four.

Background

The 2025 Indian Premier League is the 18th edition of the Indian Premier League, a franchise Twenty20 cricket league held in India, organized by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The tournament features ten teams competing in 74 matches from 22 March to 25 May 2025 across 13 venues in India.[2]

Ahead of the season, Hemang Badani replaced Ricky Ponting as Delhi's Head coach.[3][4] It was announced that Venugopal Rao would replace Sourav Ganguly as the Director of Cricket.[5] Matthew Mott replaced Pravin Amre as the assistant coach[6] while Munaf Patel was appointed as the bowling coach as James Hopes parted his ways with the franchise. [7] Kevin Pietersen joined as the team mentor.[8] and Vijay Bharadwaj joined as the Head of Scouting.[9] Gnaneswara Rao and Anton Roux replaced Biju George as Delhi's fielding coach. [10]

Player retention

Franchises were allowed to retain a maximum of six players from their squad,[11][12] including a maximum of five recent international players.[13] Franchises were required to submit their retention lists before 31 October 2024.[14] Delhi retained four players.[15]

Auction

The season's auction took place in November 2024 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.[18] The auction purse for each franchise was set at 120 crore (US$14 million), with franchises deducted an amount from the purse for every retained player.[19] Delhi had a purse remaining of 76.25 crore (US$9.0 million).[20] Franchises who did not retain six players, were allowed Right-to-Match cards at the auction for each player not retained.[21] Delhi had two cards left.[22]

Delhi bought 19 players in the auction, including 9 capped players and six overseas players. The franchise used its Right-to-Match cards to buy Mukesh Kumar and Jake Fraser-McGurk.[23] The franchise also bought back Harry Brook who had previously played for them.

Season overview

Delhi began their campaign with a promising performance, registering a tense one-wicket win over Lucknow Super Giants.[26] Chasing 168, the Capitals were struggling at one stage, but Ashutosh Sharma's calm 66* off 31 balls steered them to victory in the final over, setting the tone for a season full of close finishes and fluctuating fortunes. Despite this dramatic start, Delhi's campaign was marked by inconsistency. KL Rahul, returning to the side, anchored the batting lineup with 539 runs over the season, emerging as the top scorer for the franchise. However, the top-order failed to click consistently around him, with frequent collapses putting pressure on the middle and lower order. One of the highlights of their season was a clinical six-wicket win over Chennai Super Kings at Chepauk, where their bowling attack, led by Kuldeep Yadav and Mitchell Starc, dismantled CSK's batting order. The Capitals also secured a memorable win against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, showcasing their potential to outperform top teams. However, Delhi's hopes for a playoff berth were dashed after a crucial loss to Mumbai Indians.
