The 2024-25 Super Rygbi Cymru was the inaugural season of Super Rygbi Cymru, the elite development competition of club rugby in Wales run by the Welsh Rugby Union.
Super Rygbi Cymru is a rugby union competition between clubs in Wales. It consists of 10 teams and started in September 2024.
The competition intends to bridge the gap for players who move between the Academies and the Regions.[1] The new competition has replaced the old 13-club Indigo Premiership and is the second tier rugby competition in Wales.[2]
Super Rygbi Cymru 2024/25
Structure
Each team in the league will play each other twice, on a home-and-away basis, for a total of 18 matches played per team. The team with the most points at the end of the season will be declared the winners. The winning club will not be promoted due to "ring-fencing" of the Premiership. The bottom two clubs at the end of the season will be relegated to Division 1 (based on geographical location).
Trophy and Cup
Teams will compete for the Welsh Super Rugby Trophy and the Welsh Super Rugby Cup.
Super Rygbi Cymru Trophy
The Super Rygbi Cymru Trophy is the main league season competition contested between the weekend of 14 September and the Grand Final concluding on or around Saturday 18 May 2025.

Super Rygbi Cymru Cup
The Super Rugby Cup was presented during the Six Nations Championship, with four rounds of games and a final. The format is two pools of five clubs, with each club playing two games home and away. The winner of each pool will then meet in the final.

Challenger's Shield
A Challenger Shield will be introduced as part of the regular season. The winners of last season year's league, Llandovery RFC, will be the inaugural Shield holders.
The holding club must defend the shield in all home games during the regular season (but not during Post Season Finals). If the challenger beats them, they will become the new holder of the shield and required to defend it at their next home game.[4]
The Challenger Shield will be defended by Llandovery in their home games, starting with their meeting with RGC 1404 in Round 2 on 21 September 2024.[5]
Salary cap
All 10 clubs have signed up to a 'salary cap' system which will enable them to spend up to £150,000 on a squad of 32 players. There will be salary cap exemptions for regional players who are released (under 18 and from Senior Academy); dual contract players and injuries.[5]
The WRU will provide £105,000 to each club who will have to raise the same amount themselves each season and also meet a set of required operational expectations in running the club and their team.[5]
