Ángel Paulino Canul Pacab (born 18 September 1962) is a Mexican independent politician and former member of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI). He is known for his service at both local and federal levels of government, notably as municipal president of Opichén and as a Deputy in the LIX Legislature of the Mexican Congress.[1]
Political career
Municipal government
Canul Pacab began his political career in the late 1980s. He served as the municipal president (mayor) of Opichén, Yucatán from 1988 to 1990 under the PRI.[1] His time as municipal president marked his entry into public service and established his political presence in local governance.
Federal legislature
In the 2003 midterm elections, Canul Pacab was elected as a federal Deputy to the Chamber of Deputies (Mexico) representing the Fifth federal electoral district of Yucatán under the PRI.[1] He served in the LIX Legislature of the Mexican Congress (2003–2006), where he participated in legislative duties and was part of various commissions.
On 22 March 2006, he declared himself an independent, officially severing ties with the PRI. This move was documented in SEGOB's legislative mobility report.[2]
Post-legislative activity
After completing his term in 2006, there are no publicly recorded elected positions or major political roles held by Canul Pacab. His political career after this point has not been the subject of public documentation in official Mexican government databases or news archives.[1]
Political views
While he initially aligned with the PRI, his shift to an independent role during his legislative term reflects a stance possibly motivated by disagreements with party policies or leadership. The lack of a formal statement leaves the reasons open to interpretation.[2]
Legacy
Canul Pacab is noted among regional political observers for breaking with one of Mexico’s dominant parties during a period when political independence was still rare among legislators.[3] His tenure in the LIX Legislature remains the most documented period of his public service.
